Biddy Hobbs

Biddy gained her degree at Bath Academy of Art and then set up her first studio in London selling both there and abroad. She taught and worked there for many years. Since moving to her studio in Tunbridge Wells, she has shown in various galleries in London and the South- East. Her last teaching post was at the International School in Sevenoaks as the Ceramics specialist. Having retired from teaching, she is now concentrating solely on her own work. Her work is thrown on the potter's wheel. She loves the way she can recreate her own drawings on the surface of the clay retaining the spontaneity and liveliness of the thrown shape. At present, she uses the sgraffito technique to carve through the surface of the dark coloured slip to reveal the original light clay beneath. Her pots are high fired to 1200 degrees making them strong and durable.

My work is thrown on the potter's wheel, covered in a dark coloured slip and then I use the sgraffito technique to create the surface designs. These derive from my own abstract drawings and my work is influenced by Sung Dynasty ceramics and Islamic surface decoration.
